Mr. Robert Pockar, President and CEO of Matrix Solutions Inc., is pleased to announce the appointment of James Freeman, Jon Hutt, R. Blake Louden, and W. Robert (Rob) Sturgess as Senior Vice Presidents.

James Freeman, M.Sc., ICD.D
Senior Vice-President, Water Resources

As senior vice-president, James is responsible for integrating the company’s water resources expertise and services across geographies and disciplines.

A principal hydrologist with 30 years of consulting experience, James has participated in many different projects ─ from locating single water supply wells to providing litigation support for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites to conducting project management, technical review and risk assessment for major spills and remediation activities in the U.S., Canada and abroad. He is particularly experienced in the analysis and interpretation of hydrologic and geochemical data. He has appeared as an expert witness at various regulatory hearings in Alberta, has prepared and presented numerous technical publications and has served on the Matrix board of directors for more than 15 years.

James earned a M.Sc. degree in geology from the University of Alberta. He also completed the Directors Education Program, jointly developed by the Institute of Corporate Directors and University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, and holds the ICD.D designation. He founded Groundwater Solutions Ltd. in 1991 which merged with 3D Reclamation to form Matrix Solutions Inc. in 1998.

Jon Hutt, P.Eng.
Senior Vice-President, Assessment, Remediation, Reclamation & Monitoring
Saskatchewan and Manitoba

In his new role, Jon provides overall technical and operational leadership to Matrix’s office network in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the efficient delivery of locally-connected, responsive and scalable client services.

Jon has been managing Saskatchewan operations since 1994, originally with KBL Land Use Consulting, then with Odyssey Environmental where he served as president and chief executive officer. Following the Odyssey merger with Matrix in 2009, he was appointed vice-president, Saskatchewan Operations.

Jon’s professional experience includes providing senior level guidance on projects involving hydrocarbon and salinity impacts at upstream and midstream oil and gas facilities, as well as multi-disciplinary management for various spill response projects.

He earned his degree in environmental engineering from the University of Regina.

R. Blake Louden, P.Geol.
Senior Vice-President, Assessment, Remediation, Reclamation & Monitoring
Alberta and British Columbia

As senior vice-president, Blake leads Matrix’s operations and teams in Alberta and British Columbia, and the efficient delivery of locally-connected, responsive and scalable client services.

Blake earned a B.Sc. from the University of Calgary with a major in geology and a minor in geophysics. From 1986 to 1992 he worked throughout South America and Russia assessing oil and gas reserves for private investors and lending institutions. Since joining Matrix in 1992, he has conducted more than 600 environmental site assessments in the upstream oil and gas industry, and has served as vice-president of Operations leading the company’s Assessment, Remediation and Reclamation team since 2008.

A principal geologist, Blake has more than 25 years of consulting hydrogeology and geology experience providing technical support to Matrix projects including geological and hydrogeological assessment and interpretation and design of soil and groundwater remediation systems.

W. Robert (Rob) Sturgess, P.Eng.
Senior Vice-President, Environmental Planning, Assessment & Approvals

Rob’s focus in this newly expanded role is providing clients, in a variety of industries and geographies, with customized strategic insight and solutions while maximizing value and flexibility.

A principal engineer at Matrix, with a combined 20 years of industry and environmental experience, he specializes in project management, regulatory permitting, environmental impact assessments and industrial approvals applications.

Rob participated in the founding and management of an independent consulting company, E2 Environmental Alliance, which successfully merged with Matrix in 2002. He also served as an executive and corporate director with these companies.

He earned a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from Queen’s University.
