Environmental Sciences & Planning

The natural environment is complex and the need to understand and solve environmental problems is an ever increasingly important societal expectation. Our talented team of Environmental Scientists and Regulatory Specialists apply an inter-disciplinary approach to solving our clients’ environmental challenges and to supporting successful and sustainable project development. Our team integrates air, aquatic, regulatory, and terrestrial expertise to:

  • study the environment;
  • design solutions to environmental problems;
  • support responsible planning and permitting of industrial and infrastructure projects;
  • monitor for environmental compliance;
  • characterize and understand the impact of alternative and emerging technologies on the natural environment;
  • support project construction; and
  • support restoration and reclamation of disturbed areas to self-sustaining ecosystems.

Drawing on the expertise of our multiple discipline specialists, we tackle projects ranging from completing complex regulatory applications for large scale renewable energy projects to relocating fish or tadpoles to safer environments. The diversity of our environmental professionals makes it possible for us to work collaboratively to deliver high quality work, drive technical excellence and foster innovation across our practice, while simultaneously providing engaging and rewarding development opportunities for our employees.

What has been the most rewarding part of your career working in Environmental Sciences and Planning?

Working on multi-disciplinary teams which continually change based on the needs of projects, the site-specific environmental conditions, and the regulatory landscape means you need to be adaptable, actively engaged, and always applying a learning mindset. My career in Environmental Sciences and Planning has afforded me the opportunity to work with dynamic teams and individuals both in the office and out in the natural environment for over 25 years. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have a career that has been a journey of continuous learning and that has been many things but never boring.

What attributes make for a strong practitioner in Environmental Sciences and Planning?

Adaptive, inquisitive, creative problem solver, collaborative and open to debate.

Why is the Environmental Sciences and Planning practice area important for Matrix?

Environmental science is the study of organisms, their interactions with each other and how they interrelate with the environment. In an ever-changing world where emerging and traditional technologies grapple with how to manage our environmental resources, understanding where and how air, water and terrestrial resources interact and the planning needed to conserve and restore that functionality for future generations, is of paramount importance to Matrix and the communities and clients we support.

Environmental Support for Finch West Light Rail Transit Construction Project

The Finch West light rail transit (LRT) project will bring an additional 11 kilometers and 18 stops of public transit, while renewing aging infrastructure. The project aims to reduce travel and connection times and provide an economic boost for the community. The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3) under Mosaic Transit Constructors General Partnership (Mosaic) and is owned by Metrolinx. Matrix has been working with Mosaic on several aspects of the project from the pre-construction phase and continues to support the project during construction activities.
