Air Emissions Management

Air quality is important to you, your company, and the communities where you live and work. Air quality isn’t only about the air we breathe; it’s also about maintaining regulatory compliance to ensure project success. We take the time to understand your project so that we can provide practical solutions that help you meet the expectations of the ever-evolving regulatory systems across Canada. We help you meet and reduce your greenhouse gas (GHG) and air emission targets and understand what impact your project’s emissions may have on other environmental factors, such as lakes and streams. Together, we can manage your air emissions to mitigate your reputational and operational risks.

Our air emissions management expertise includes:

  • Air dispersion modelling (pollutants, odours, lower explosion limits)
  • Emission inventories including National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) and AEIR Inventory Reporting
  • Approval amendments and renewals, including monthly/annual regulatory reporting
  • Provincial/federal GHG quantification and reporting
  • Ambient air quality monitoring and data interpretation
  • Infrastructure related assessments including:
      • Climate lens GHG assessments for funding
      • Embodied carbon assessments
      • Air quality management plans for construction
      • Ambient air construction monitoring

Air Quality Assessment: In Situ Thermal Oil Sands SAGD Facility

An oilsands developer requested to scope a potential increase in their facility sulphur dioxide (SO2) emission limit to allow for operational flexibility. To support this regulatory amendment request, Matrix Solutions Inc. conducted refined air dispersion modelling at the higher sulphur dioxide rate to predict air quality impacts of the change. The initial ground level sulphur dioxide concentration predictions were higher than expected under certain wind conditions. Matrix determined the problem was with the building shape and orientation of the steam generator stacks causing building downwash. Matrix worked with the client to redesign the building and orientation of emission sources to drastically reduce the predicted air quality impacts of the proposed change to sulphur dioxide emissions.

Spill Response and Remediation Program Management

Spill Response and Remediation Program Management

Murphy Oil Corporation discovered a condensate release from one of its pipelines at three separate surface locations in April 2015. Our client needed to delineate and contain the spill. Monitoring of wildlife, surface water, groundwater, and atmosphere quality was required to assess for impacts from the release. Once containment was put in place, Murphy needed to remediate and manage risks associated with the spill.

Gas-Fired Power Plant Approval

Signalta Resources required approvals from both Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) and the Alberta Utilities Commission in order to construct a new natural gas-fired power co-generation facility providing electricity, heat and carbon dioxide (CO2) to a neighbouring greenhouse east of Coaldale, Alberta.
