WaterCharger Battery Energy Storage System – Environmental Assessment and Permitting

In 2021, TransAlta Corporation retained Matrix Solutions to support site selection and environmental assessment and permitting of the WaterCharger Battery Energy Storage System Project in Rocky View County, Alberta. The project is being developed on approximately 3.3 hectares of private land owned by TransAlta that are part of the existing Ghost Hydro-electric facility; and will have a total capacity of 180 megawatts (MW) once fully operational (expected by December 2023).

Environmental services for Keyera KAPS project

Environmental services for Keyera KAPS project

KAPS, a natural gas liquids (NGL) and condensate system, is a highly desired industry pipeline solution designed to integrate services, generate more volumes and expand commercial opportunities. All of which can benefit Alberta. KAPS creates a platform for future investment opportunities that could include additional gas and condensate processing investments, new NGL infrastructure or other value-added services

Environmental Support for Finch West Light Rail Transit Construction Project

Environmental Support for Finch West Light Rail Transit Construction Project

The Finch West light rail transit (LRT) project will bring an additional 11 kilometers and 18 stops of public transit, while renewing aging infrastructure. The project aims to reduce travel and connection times and provide an economic boost for the community. The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3) under Mosaic Transit Constructors General Partnership (Mosaic) and is owned by Metrolinx. Matrix has been working with Mosaic on several aspects of the project from the pre-construction phase and continues to support the project during construction activities.

Air Quality Assessment: In Situ Thermal Oil Sands SAGD Facility

Air Quality Assessment: In Situ Thermal Oil Sands SAGD Facility

An oilsands developer requested to scope a potential increase in their facility sulphur dioxide (SO2) emission limit to allow for operational flexibility. To support this regulatory amendment request, Matrix Solutions Inc. conducted refined air dispersion modelling at the higher sulphur dioxide rate to predict air quality impacts of the change. The initial ground level sulphur dioxide concentration predictions were higher than expected under certain wind conditions. Matrix determined the problem was with the building shape and orientation of the steam generator stacks causing building downwash. Matrix worked with the client to redesign the building and orientation of emission sources to drastically reduce the predicted air quality impacts of the proposed change to sulphur dioxide emissions.

West Eau Claire Park Public Realm Plan

West Eau Claire Park Public Realm Plan

West Eau Claire Park is a popular area along the Bow River, just north and west of downtown and near the iconic Peace Bridge. The City of Calgary wished to connect the community with the Bow River and also provide important flood protection for downtown Calgary. The park was redeveloped through widening and raising the existing pathway, protecting and enhancing the river bank, and grading and landscaping the south overbank area to protect against a 1:200-year flood event with 0.5 m of freeboard.

We routinely lead characterization of stream morphology to:

  • Assess fluvial erosion hazards
  • Develop alternatives for erosion control in environmental assessments
  • Develop management strategies as part of land use planning (subwatershed, secondary, tertiary plans and site plans)
  • Assist in culvert/bridge design
  • Define erosion thresholds to inform stormwater management
