To meet conditions of the National Energy Board approval for a pipeline expansion project, water wells within a 200 m proximity of blasting locations where required to be assessed before and after blasting activities. The purpose of the program was to complete testing and assessment of the water wells to establish baseline water quantity and quality information and to enable subsequent confirmation that the blasting activities associated with the project did not impact the wells
Oil Sands Exploration Site Closure Experience
Since 2010 Matrix has been supporting oil sands exploration (OSE) programs with site closure expertise for in-situ sites in Northeast Alberta. We provide practical and cost effective services that support site closure, beginning after OSE program drilling through to reclamation certificates. These include aerial site assessments, ground site assessments, reclamation recommendations, annual reporting, and reclamation certificate applications.
Well Site Reclamation Portfolio
A multinational energy company retained Matrix to provide reclamation services on a large portfolio of inactive oil and gas facilities in the Wainwright, Alberta area. The facilities have passed beyond their productive operating phase and Matrix is developing strategies to support the client with land reclamation and liability reduction by achieving regulatory closure for each site. The portfolio involves activities on 80 to 100 sites/year. Matrix has been assisting on this portfolio since 2010, including site closure activities from Phase 1 environmental site assessments to the submission of reclamation certificate applications.
Well Site Abandonment, Remediation and Reclamation Portfolio
An oil and gas producer with operations in southeast Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba has been progressing a large-scale abandonment program of approximately 50 to 100 well sites annually. Matrix was retained to assist with the management of the abandonment and reclamation program. The goal is to reduce the producer’s environmental liability, return land to equivalent productivity, and achieve regulatory closure for the sites.
Inactive Well Site Closure Portfolio
In Northeast British Columbia, approximately 10,000 oil and gas wells have become inactive for economical or technological reasons creating significant environmental liability for oil and gas producers. A large producer in the region retained Matrix to manage an area-based portfolio of inactive well sites and progress the sites from their current status through site screening, site investigation, remediation, Certificate of Restoration (COR) Part 1 application, forested and agricultural land restoration, post reclamation assessments, and COR Part 2 application. Matrix works on approximately 150 sites/year within this portfolio.
