Our client was in the resource delineation and quantification stage of planning a lithium brine project in South America. As part of this exploration, it was recognized that hydrogeological aquifer modelling could be incorporated to refine mineral resource estimates and optimize production plans.
Matrix Solutions was asked to support the completion of a National Instrument 43-101 compliant mineral resource and reserve estimate. Matrix developed a detailed hydrostratigraphic model integrating lithological and hydraulic data from exploration drilling programs along with brine chemistry parameters sampled throughout the site. This was subsequently used to build a conceptual water balance and three-dimensional groundwater flow/brine transportation numerical model. Matrix provided strategic guidance, helping our client to refine their brine lithium resource estimate and optimize for higher grade brines using the model to inform production well spacing. Insights from the model also provided improved understanding of the groundwater recharge conditions in the area, which helped to address important environmental considerations for later stages of project development.
Based on the information provided, NI-43-101 compliant resource and reserve quantifications were produced. The client was able to optimize development plans for enhanced brine production and leverage understanding of recharge and evapotranspiration to effectively manage the resource and reserve estimates of lithium in the salar brines.
