John Feick

Mr. John Feick has a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta. Mr. Feick’s current business activity includes being the Executive Chairman of Matrix Solutions Inc., the Chairman, Partner of Kemex Engineering Ltd. and a Consultant and Investor in energy related businesses in Western Canada. Mr. Feick also sits on the Board of Directors for Occidental Petroleum Corporation, Fort Chicago Energy Partnership and Graham Construction.
Mr. Feick’s previous business experience (1976-1994) includes being the Senior Vice President of NOVA Corporation and President, COO of NOVA Chemicals Ltd.

Robert Pockar, M.Sc., P.Eng.

Mr. Robert Pockar joined Matrix in 1993 and has grown with the company through a succession of more senior appointments and responsibilities. Mr. Pockar provides executive leadership and strategic vision to Matrix. As a Professional Engineer and Hydrogeologist, he continues to provide technical review for environmental liability assessments, soil and groundwater remediation, groundwater resource development and environmental impact assessments.
Mr. Pockar holds a M.Sc. in Earth Science from the University of Waterloo and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta. In the not-for-profit sector, he currently serves on the Board of Directors for Science Alberta Foundation.

Blake Louden, P.Geol.

Mr. Blake Louden has a B.Sc. from the University of Calgary (Major in Geology and Minor in Geophysics). Mr. Louden is a Principal Geologist at Matrix and has 24 years of consulting hydrogeology and geology experience. From 1986 – 1992, Mr. Louden worked throughout South America and Russia assessing Oil and Gas reserves for lending institutions. Mr. Louden has worked with Matrix since 1992 and has conducted more than 600 site assessments in the upstream oil and gas industry. As a Principal Geologist he provides technical support to Matrix projects including geological and hydrogeological assessment, interpretation and design of soil and groundwater remediation systems.
Mr. Louden’s business experience includes serving as a director on the Matrix Board, Operations manager at Matrix from 2002 to 2004 and currently Vice President, Assessment and Remediation Services at Matrix.

Jonathan Hutt, P.Eng.

Mr. Jon Hutt has been managing Saskatchewan operations since 1994, most recently with Odyssey Environmental Ltd., which merged with Matrix in early 2009. He has provided environmental innovation and expertise on various remediation and reclamation projects throughout Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and Montana, including remediation of over 170 open and buried flare pits. As Vice President of Saskatchewan Operations, he manages teams for response, assessment and remediation of numerous oil, emulsion, salt water, refined hydrocarbon, and chemical spills, including spills on water bodies. He is currently the Vice Chairperson of the local Oil Spill Contingency Group in southeast Saskatchewan.

Mr. Robert Sturgess is Principal Engineer at Matrix and has a combined 20 years of industry and environmental experience. Mr. Sturgess has a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University and specializes in project management, regulatory permitting, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and industrial approvals applications.
Mr. Sturgess has also participated in the founding and management of an independent environmental consulting company, E2 Environmental Alliance, which successfully merged with Matrix Solutions in 2002. He also has served as an executive and corporate Director with these companies and is currently Vice President, Regulatory Approval Services at Matrix.

Martin Bobyn, B.Sc.

Mr. Martin Bobyn is an environmental geoscientist with over 20 years of diverse experience with geological, hydrogeological and environmental projects. He has managed a variety of geological and hydrogeological drilling and testing programs in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region and carried out numerous environmental site investigations at upstream and downstream petroleum production and distribution facilities across Western Canada. He has managed all aspects of exploration for oil sands evaluation programs in the Fort McMurray oil sands minable area.
Mr. Bobyn holds a B.Sc. degree in Geology (Advanced) from the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon).

David Van Vliet, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.

Mr. David Van Vliet has 20 years of experience as a water resources engineer, most recently with AquaResource Inc. which merged with Matrix in late 2011. Mr. Van Vliet has experience in various areas relating to water resources including watershed hydrology, groundwater and surface water interactions, hydrologic impact assessments, climate change, and information management. Mr. Van Vliet was actively involved in the development of the water quantity framework relating to the Province of Ontario’s Clean Water Act.
Mr. Van Vliet earned a B.Sc. in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Guelph before going on to complete a M.A. Sc. in Water Resources from the University of Waterloo. Based in Waterloo, Ontario, he heads up the Hydrotechnical Engineering group at Matrix.

Pat Reid, P.Ag.

Ms. Pat Reid is a Principal Agrologist at Matrix and joined 3-D Reclamation (a predecessor company to Matrix) in 1996. Ms. Reid has acquired over 20 years of experience in environmental consulting since completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Alberta in 1979. During her career in consulting, she has been involved in the planning, execution and technical support for environmental site assessments and remediation programs at a wide range of upstream oil and gas facilities. The site assessments have typically been conducted to address regulatory requirements and/or to determine and address liabilities. Pat is currently Vice President Corporate at Matrix.
Brent Forrest, P.Eng.

Mr. Forrest is a professional engineer with over 13 years of experience. With a strong background in hydrogeology, geophysics and remediation, he provides technical leadership and direction to several initiatives. This including the implementation of a streamlined internal project management system, and the development of Matrix’s in-situ remediation and geophysics teams providing clients with effective, pragmatic and cost effective solutions.
In his role as vice president of project services, Brent provides leadership and business guidance for the internal facing project services groups (Document Services, Drafting, GIS, Data Management, IT and Equipment). The project services groups allow Matrix technical staff to focus on data collection, analysis and interpretation as opposed to data formatting and presentation.

Wim Veldman, M.Sc., FEIC, P.Eng.

Mr. Veldman’s professional career focuses on the hydrotechnical components of projects. He has more than 40 years of experience in the planning, design, regulatory approval, construction and operation of water resources, pipeline, mining and infrastructure projects in Canada, the U.S. and internationally.
Mr. Veldman joined Matrix as vice president in 2005 following the merger of his firm Hydroconsult EN3. Multiple provincial and national consulting engineering awards recognized the expertise and scope of Hydroconsult’s staff, who are now in leading roles at Matrix.
In 1984, Mr. Veldman was awarded the distinguished grade of Fellow in the Engineering Institute of Canada. In 2009, Mr. Veldman completed a 3-year term as an APEGGA Councillor.
Mr. Veldman joined Matrix as vice president in 2005 following the merger of his firm Hydroconsult EN3. Multiple provincial and national consulting engineering awards recognized the expertise and scope of Hydroconsult’s staff, who are now in leading roles at Matrix.

Phillip Ullman, P.Eng.

Mr. Phillip Ullman is a Principal Engineer at Matrix having retired as President and CEO in March 2008. He has a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta and has been an environmental specialist his whole working career. A mixture of private and public employment has provided him with unique experience in project management of multi-disciplinary Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), expert testimony, senior management of environmental consulting companies and continuous experience in air quality and noise issues.
Mr. Ullman has founded and served as a senior executive in a number of environmental related consulting companies including Environmental Management Associates, HydroQual Laboratories Limited and E2 Environmental Alliance Inc.

James T. Freeman, M.Sc.

Mr. James (Jamie) Freeman is a Principal Hydrogeologist at Matrix, with over 25 years of hydrogeological consulting experience. During this time, Mr. Freeman has participated in many different groundwater investigations, ranging in scope and size from locating single water supply wells to providing litigation support for U.S. EPA Superfund sites to conducting project management for major groundwater investigations and remediation activities. He is particularly experienced in the analysis and interpretation of hydrologic and geochemical data for groundwater modeling, contamination, mine dewatering and water supply.
After graduate school at the University of Alberta, Mr. Freeman worked as a hydrogeologist in Washington D.C., Denver and California for five years prior to returning to Alberta to found Groundwater Solutions Ltd. in late 1991. By the time of its merger with 3D Reclamation to form Matrix Solutions in 1998, Groundwater Solutions had around 20 staff and over $2.6MM in annual revenues.

Ms. Halat has over 15 years of professional experience as chief financial officer. Her responsibilities include financial accounting, budgeting, cost estimating, and contract administration. Her expertise in finance has assisted with the merger of three separate companies, most recently with Odessey Environmental Ltd. in early 2009.
